Filipiñana

Five titles land on Kino Film Collection this November, spanning surrealist classics, cult oddities, and sharp modern comedy. Guy Maddin’s alpine melodrama Careful opens the month, while reality and performance blur in the thought-provoking documentary Re-Creation. For something lighter, Quentin Dupieux’s The Second Act delivers a gloriously absurd French ensemble comedy about the chaos of filmmaking.

Careful
Guy Maddin | Comedy Drama | 1992

Guy Maddin’s early masterpiece takes place in an Alpine village where the wary residents —adult, child and animal!—must speak softly and tread lightly lest they cause an avalanche. But sexual frenzies teem in this world of repression, setting off love triangles and quadrangles with deadly consequences. Bathed in lurid, luminescent tints, “Careful” resembles a vintage melodrama from another planet.

Re-Creation
Jim Sheridan & David Merriman | Drama | 2026

Directed by Jim Sheridan and David Merriman, this gripping drama imagines Ian Bailey standing trial in Ireland for the 1996 murder of French filmmaker Sophie Toscan du Plantier. Starring Vicky Krieps, the film follows a fictional jury wrestling with conflicting evidence, questioning guilt, innocence, and whether truth can overcome bias and sensationalism.

Filipiñana
Rafael Manuel | Comedy Drama | 2026

This Sundance prize winner, executive produced by Jia Zhangke, follows a young "tee girl" at a posh golf club outside of Manila as she tries to return a mislaid golf club to its patriarchal director. But something is rotten beneath the pristine fairways of the elite resort, and her wanderings reveal stark inequalities and troubling truths about the club, her native Philippines, and her own past.

The Second Act
Quentin Dupieux | Comedy | 2026

Léa Seydoux, Louis Garrel, and Vincent Lindon star in Quentin Dupieux's surreal comedy that serves as a mirror of cinema. Florence wants to introduce David, the man she loves, to her father Guillaume. However, David isn’t attracted to her and wants to throw her into the arms of his friend Willy. The four of them meet in a restaurant in the middle of nowhere, where fiction and reality collide.
