Now Streaming: Liza: A Truly Terrific Absolutely True Story

As the new documentary about Liza Minnelli proclaims, she has achieved the rare status where only a first name is necessary.
Daughter of the great Judy Garland and Oscar-winning director Vincente Minnelli, Liza blazed her way to superstardom in her own right. There’s towering talent, but this documentary also explores her knack for identifying artistic mentors and collaborators. The film starts with Liza’s complex relationship with her mother and then surrogate mother Kay Thompson, a performer and author of the Eloise children’s books. There’s lyricist Fred Ebb and composer John Kander who co-wrote the musical Flora and the Red Menace, which won Liza her first Tony award. French singer Charles Aznavour who influenced Liza’s singing prowess, and of course Bob Fosse who directed Liza as the iconic Sally Bowles in Cabaret. Throughout the documentary Liza colorfully recounts her admiration and occasional frustration with her collaborators. Viewers truly get a view into how she collected a family-like relationship with other artists and became the icon we all know her to be.
Liza: A Truly Terrific Absolutely True Story by Bruce David Klein is now streaming on Kino Film Collection.
